King’s Oak pupils visit the SS Great Britain

Year 2 children at King’s Oak Academy enjoyed an unforgettable historical trip to the SS Great Britain.
Launched in 1843, the SS Great Britain is a groundbreaking passenger steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. As the first iron-hulled, screw-propelled ship to cross the Atlantic, she revolutionised maritime travel.
During the visit, pupils travelled back in time to take part in a reconstructed launch party, dressing in period costumes to experience what the ship’s maiden voyage may have been like.
The children also stepped into the shoes of engineers, learning how the ship was designed and built.
Pupils had great fun exploring the famous vessel and discovering what life on board might have been like for passengers and crew during the Victorian era.
A spokesperson for the academy said: “The trip was a fantastic opportunity for our children to bring their history learning to life.
“They loved exploring the ship, dressing up in Victorian costumes and learning about the incredible engineering behind the SS Great Britain. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the day.”
