Students embark on Crest Discovery Day
Twenty-eight Year 9 students from King’s Oak Academy in Kingswood participated in an enriching science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) Crest Discovery Day hosted at Mewburn Ellis, a distinguished Bristol-based law firm.
Crest Awards offer an introduction to real project work and give students the freedom to run their own investigations. They can be completed in one day, with students working together in self-managed groups.
Collaborating in small teams, the students were challenged to design innovative sustainable products, receiving expert guidance from associates within the firm. Subsequently, they showcased their concepts to the firm’s partners, defending their designs and fielding numerous inquiries.
Demonstrating remarkable dedication, the students produced very impressive results that were a fitting showcase of their talent. Moreover, they gained insights into the connection of law and STEM disciplines.
Laura Phillips, Associate Assistant Principal for STEM at King’s Oak Academy, said: “Completing their introductory module for a Crest Award, all students received certificates and left with a wealth of ideas regarding STEM career paths. Credit to all students for representing the school extremely well.
“Students will hugely benefit from getting out of the classroom and into a professional workspace to accomplish these real-life projects.”
